How to Recover Xbox One Data from Hard Drive

Xbox One Console

Recovering data from an Xbox One console’s hard drive is a pretty complicated process, especially when storage has a lot of bad sectors and the files inside suffer a severe case of data corruption. However, thanks to continuous advancements in gaming technology, we have multiple ways to get the lost data back. In this article, we will demonstrate how to recover data from the Xbox One console hard drive and everything you require. Without further ado, let’s dive in.

  • Step 1: Connect Xbox One Hard Drive with a Windows PC
  • Step 2: Run CHKDSK Utility to Recover Data from Xbox One Console Hard Drive
  • Step 3: Recover Data from Xbox One Hard Disk via Data Restoration Software

Preparing for Xbox One Data Rescue

Before we proceed to start the recovery process, you need a few things to recover data from your Xbox One console hard drive, which are:

  • A Windows computer
  • SATA to USB connector
  • Access to high-speed internet
  • An external hard disk drive (only if your computer’s HDD doesn’t have enough space to store the retrieved Xbox One data. Look into our Xbox external drive restoration guide if so)

Here are two things you need to keep in your mind before starting the restoration process:

  • Always handle the Xbox One hard disk if you lose data because of physical damage or logical failure
  • Stop using Xbox One as soon as you realize data loss occurred if you want to find and keep the recovered bits of information. It’s not a rule, but it never hurts to be careful

With all that said, follow these steps to recover data from Xbox One console hard drive:

Step 1: Connect Xbox One Hard Drive with a Windows PC

Remove the Xbox One hard disk drive from the console and connect it to your Windows PC using a SATA to USB cable (you can also use an HDD enclosure with a port). If you get a prompt asking if you are looking to format the hard drive, click on the “No” button.

Step 2: Run CHKDSK Utility to Recover Data from Xbox One Console Hard Drive

In this step, we will see if we can access Xbox One hard disk drive data using your computer. If you can, copy the Xbox One data and store it in your computer’s HDD. After that, check if you can view the Xbox One data you can later copy through File Explorer. If no data is visible on Xbox One via File Explorer, it’s time to try using the CHKDSK Utility tool. This tool will scan your hard drive for any sort of error and fix it immediately. Here’s how you can run the CHKDSK Utility tool to restore Xbox One data:

  1. Click on the “Search” icon on the taskbar and type “cmd.”
  2. Once the “Command Prompt” shows up in the search result, click on the “Run as administrator” option located in the right panel. The Command Prompt window with administrator access will show up.
  3. Type the “chkdsk X: /f” command and press the “Enter” key. Here, replace “X” with the letter of the drive in which you kept the Xbox One data.

Now, the CHKDSK Utility tool will scan the chosen drive for corrupted or problematic files and fix them. Please note that if this step doesn’t work, or you can’t access the Xbox One hard drive on your PC, move straight to the third step.

Step 3: Recover Data from Xbox One Hard Disk via Data Restoration Software

If the CHKDSK Utility tool is unable to restore the Xbox One data, it’s time for us to switch to a professional data recovery application. All you have to do is download and install one of your choice. But there’s a catch! While you can choose any data recovery application, the software must meet two specific conditions:

  • The application must come from a renowned data rescue firm
  • The data retrieving app should have plenty of positive reviews from both consumers and experts

Luckily, most of these applications share a recovery process. Now, download the data restoration app on your computer and follow these instructions:

  1. Connect the Xbox One console’s hard drive to your Windows PC like in step 1.
  2. Now, launch the data recovery application on your computer.
  3. Choose the “Xbox One hard drive” from the list of available drives and folders.
  4. Click the “Scan” option. The whole scanning process might take a few minutes, so please be patient.
  5. Once the scan is complete, you will be able to see all the recoverable files. Select all the files you want to recover and click the “Recover” option.
  6. Pick a folder where you want to download the selected files and click on the “OK” button.

Now, all the selected Xbox One files will be downloaded on your Windows computer. You have recovered the Xbox One console’s data. Now, you can transfer the recovered data back to your Xbox One HDD after you fix it. It is recommended to back up your Xbox One data regularly to make sure you don’t lose your important games and progress, even if your console’s hard drive fails next time.
