How to Recover Adobe XD Files

Adobe XD

If you are a vector graphic designer, it is possible that you are already using Adobe XD for creating vector designs. After spending hours on creating quality designs, if you find that all of your hard work is gone within a matter of a second, it could be quite frustrating. Do not worry, in this article, we are going to take a look at some of the possible methods you can use to recover your lost Adobe XD files.

Table of Contents

  • Method 1 – Adobe XD Auto-Recovery
  • Method 2 – Check the Recycle Bin or Trash
  • Method 3 – Check the Adobe Cloud
  • Method 4 – Use a third-party document recovery tool

Method 1 – Adobe XD Auto-Recovery

With versions 8 and above of the Adobe XD software, there is an Auto-Recovery feature available. This feature will automatically keep saving your files every 5 seconds. Which means, in case of a system crash or similar troubles, anything that you have done until the last 5 seconds will be saved automatically. The next time you launch the application, the recovered file will be available as a recent file in the Start screen or the “File” menu.

The “*” character will be added at the end of the recovered document title, which will allow you to easily identify the recovered files from your normal XD files. The feature is available on both Windows and Mac operating systems. You can check the last method on our article on recovering Adobe Illustrator files to know more about turning on the auto-save feature in Adobe products.

Method 2 – Check the Recycle Bin or Trash

Based on your operating system and unless you specifically changed the settings to permanently delete the files with the delete command, it is possible that your Adobe XD files are in your recycle bin or trash. Keep in mind that this will only work if you manually deleted the XD files on accident. If, for example, your system crashed during the designing process, the file will not be put in the trash. Because it is not a deletion process, rather a system crash.

Method 3 – Check the Adobe Cloud

Given that you have properly set up your Adobe XD software, all your files will be automatically synced to the cloud frequently. The files are saved in https://assets.adobe.com/cloud-documents. For this to work, you should have the auto-sync feature enabled on your Adobe XD application. The feature will be turned on by default. So, unless you manually turned it off sometimes in the past, you should be able to recover Adobe XD files by going to the above link and finding the correct file.

Method 4 – Use a third-party document recovery tool

In case you deleted one of your XD files by accident, and you cannot see it in your recycle bin, your next best bet is using an external document recovery tool to find the file and recover it accordingly. Make sure that you are using a good document recovery software. Because there are many tools that are made for things like recovering videos, photos, etc., it is better to choose a tool that is specifically made for recovering documents for better chances of getting your XD files back.
